PDP National Chairman, Dr. Ezkwesili Nwodo
The Congress for Progressive Change and the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties have described Wednesday’s defection of three senators from the Peoples Democratic Party as a sign of failure of the ruling party.
The CNPP and the CPC, in separate reactions in Abuja, said the defection from the PDP to the Action Congress of Nigeria and the CPC had clearly indicated that the PDP’s days were numbered.
Three senators — Joel Danlam Taraba), John Eferekaya (Delta) and Umar Argungun (Kebbi) defected from the PDP to the ACN and the CPC.
While Eferekaya and Danlami moved to the ACN, Argungun joined the CPC to become the first member of the party in the Senate. In the House of Representatives, at least two PDP members have defected to the ACN.
More members of the ruling party in Osun, Edo and Delta have also been leaving for opposition parties.
In Delta State, a governorship aspirant, Chief Ovie Omo-Agege, last week defected from the PDP to the ACN on the grounds that there was no level playing field for members of the ruling party.
The three senators had cited crises in the state branches of the PDP as reasons for their defection.
Commenting on the development, the National Chairman of the CPC, Alhaji Geidam Almajiri, said the PDP was a party in crisis.
He said, “You can see that people are leaving. I can say that most of the people that joined the party with high expectations are disillusioned.
