Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan
The judgement of the Court of Appeal in Benin, Edo State, on Tuesday, which annulled the election of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan as the governor of Delta State, has caused panic among the governors of the Peoples Democratic Party, as they look forward to the next elections in 2011.
SATURDAY PUNCH country-wide investigations showed that the eviction of Uduaghan from the Government House, Asaba, had increased the subdued tension among the PDP governors, who have started to feel that their jobs are being threatened by the recent verdicts of the judiciary.
It was learnt that the PDP and its governors were worried about the uncertainty surrounding the governorship tussle in Osun State, which is set to be determined soon by the Court of Appeal, Ibadan.
After over three years of litigation, the Appeal Court in Ibadan is set to rule on the appeal filed by Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, the Action Congress of Nigeria candidate in the April 14, 2007 election against the PDP candidate, Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who is in his second and final term.
SATURDAY PUNCH gathered that the political office holders under the PDP umbrella were shocked that President Goodluck Jonathan did not in any way try to influence the verdicts of the Court of Appeal in Ilorin and Benin, which had made the PDP to lose political control in Ekiti, and is causing uncertainty in Delta and Osun states.
It was gathered that the embattled Uduaghan had made last-minute moves to appeal to the Federal Government to intervene in the perceived threat against his job three days before the judgement, but met a President Jonathan, who was not disposed to interfering with the judiciary.
Jonathan was said to have told Uduaghan in a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja that he would not go back on his covenant with Nigerians to give them elections that would be devoid of the ills of the past.
A source in the Villa said that the President told a desperate Uduaghan in blunt terms that he would not interfere in the judicial process.
