The Super Falcons took a bold step closer to regaining their African title on Thursday when they thrashed the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon 5-1 in the first semifinal match of the African Women‘s Championship, booking a place in the final against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.
Defending champions Equatorial Guinea were dragged into extra time before overcoming hostesses South Africa 3-1 in the second semifinal match of the day.
The two finalists have also qualified for the 2011 FIFA Women‘s World Cup in Germany.
A hat-trick from veteran striker Perpetua Nkwocha and a brace from Desire Oparanozie gave the Falcons the deserved victory over 10-man Cameroon.
Cameroon‘s Bou Cathy got the marching order for insulting the referee after she was initially yellow carded for a foul on Stella Mbachu.
The Lionesses‘ only goal was scored by Jeanette Ngock in the second half through a mix up that resulted from a free kick.
Oparanozie opened scoring in the 34th minute with a corner kick that sailed over the defence into the net. On the dot of halftime she rose up to head home a cross from Mbachu to make it 2-0 for Nigeria before Nkwocha resumed her scoring spree in the second half.
Nkwocha netted her first goal of the game in the 58th minute, capitalising on the error of goalkeeper Jumbone Julienne. Another volley in the 74th minute took her tally up. She completed her hat-trick in the 81st minute from the penalty spot after she had been brought down by the Cameroonian defence, taking her total in four games to ten goals.
Both Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea are not strangers to each other. Both sides met in the semifinals at the 2008 edition where the Falcons were beaten 1-0 and denied the title for the first time since the competition was introduced.
