NDLEA impounds cannabis machine

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Thursday said it had intercepted a locally made cannabis compressing machine, seized 322.2kgs of dried weeds suspected to be cannabis and arrested 50 persons.

A statement by the Head, Public Affairs, NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the operation, which was carried out by the Lagos State Command of the agency, led to the arrest of two major cannabis dealers and several suspected users of the drug.

Lagos State Commander, NDLEA, Mrs. Nnoruka Kenechi, gave the names of the major cannabis dealers arrested during the raid as Mr. Williams Nwaso, 42, from Delta State, and Mr. Garba Usman, 30, from Kano State.

According to the statement, Nwaso was allegedly caught with the cannabis compressing machine and 164.5kgs of dried weeds that tested positive to cannabis while Garba was found in possession of 157.7kgs of cannabis.

Kenechi said, “Nwaso is a suspected cannabis dealer believed to be exporting cannabis to neighbouring countries of Benin and Ghana.”

Nwaso, who hails from Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State, was arrested in his house at Igando area of Lagos, the agency said.

“The machine was locally produced by him to package cannabis for either export or inter-state distribution,” it added.

Usman was caught with cannabis at Mile 12 Market, Lagos.

Garba told narcotics investigators that he works for one Alhaji Danbaba.

“I am only was working a businessman simply known as Alhaji Danbaba. I began working for him barely seven days ago because his senior sales man travelled,” the suspect allegedly said in his confessional statement.

NDLEA said it had started investigating both cases.

The Chief Executive Officer, NDLEA, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, said a similar operation was also taking place in other states.
