The Super Falcons made good their promise of regaining the African title when they beat defending champions Equatorial Guinea 4-2 in the final of the 7th African Women‘s Championship in South Africa on Sunday.

Sunday’s victory means Nigeria have won the competition that started in 1998 a record six times.

The Falcons opened the scoring in the first half through Perpetua Nkwocha, making it her 11th goal of the tournament.

But the Guineans drew level in the second half through their captain Conceicao Carolina, who capitalised on the confusion in the Nigeria goal area during a corner-kick to head the ball over goalkeeper Precious Dede.

Nigeria took the lead again through Desire Oparanozie, who combined with Stella Mbachu to beat the Guinean defenders in a counterattack.

The Guinean defence crumbled under pressure when Noah Nke headed into her own net a cross from Mbachu to make it 3-1. But Guinean managed to get a goal back in the 82nd minute through Bhjo Sayo Jade to give her team a glimmer of hope.

Their hope was dimmed however when Carolina gifted Nigeria with another own-goal in the 83rd minute to make it 4-2.

In the losers final played earlier in the day, South Africa beat the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon 2-0 to emerge as the third best team of the tournament.
