A season of flood

IT is common  to find houses in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, surrounded by stagnant water, bushes and makeshift bridges also known as 'monkey bridge'. Some residents of the town now have to leave their homes once it rains because water always overflows into their homes. Mr kayode who stays off Fak Street, said he and his family woke up one Sunday morning to discover his living room was flooded from the rain that fell at night. He said he was lucky he had nothing that could spoil on the tiled floor but that his neighbour was not so lucky as her bed was wet and some of her food items got bad due to the flood.

Those residing in other areas like Amarata, kpansia Yenizue-gene and Swali also complained bitterly. Some said they have to cross a long mass of water like a big stream to get to their houses and as such find it difficult to go out for leisure. They said once they go out to work and return, they remain indoors till the next day.

With all these frustration by the waters, there is still one interesting aspect. Some residents say they hardly buy fresh fish from  the market as they now fish in front or beside their residential apartments. Mr kayode even said one of his neighbours even caught enough to eat and sell at one point.
