Ezeugo advises Siasia on 2012 Nations Cup

Ex-international Emeka Ezeugo has advised Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, not to exclude the players who have received condemnation from many Nigerians after their poor performances at the World Cup from his 2012 Nations Cup plans.

Nigeria failed to win any match at the World Cup in South Africa, a situation that led to their low rating by FIFA. But Siasia, who was appointed on Thursday, promised to make the team great again.

Ezeugo, who was a member of the 1994 World Cup squad, told our correspondent on the telephone on Monday that Siasia would succeed if he decided to keep the majority of the South Africa 2010 players.

“Nobody would want to remember the 2010 World Cup for any reason because of our performance but there are lessons to be learnt from it,” he said.

“There’s an urgent need to rebuild our team but that does not mean we should do away with the good players who were a bit unlucky at the tournament.

“If Siasia is going to get the best squad in the short time he must blend the World Cup players with a few new ones for the 2012 Nations Cup.

“Siasia knows the Eagles will need attention in the defence and the attack.

“Incidentally, our strikers are performing well in Europe but we still need to work on the defence.”

Ezeugo added that Siasia would need highly knowlegeable assistants, fearing he might find things difficult with inexperienced coaches around him.

He said, “It is good he has picked Simon Kalika whom he knows very well but the other assistants must be people that are also good.”
