Indications emerged in Abuja on Tuesday that the Peoples Democratic Party and the National Assembly might clash over the controversial clause in a bill seeking amendments to the 2010 Electoral Act.
THE PUNCH, on Tuesday, learnt that the leadership of the PDP might meet with the principal officers of the National Assembly to brainstorm on the amendments.
Analysts say that the meeting may witness a showdown between the party and the leadership as the PDP may appeal to the legislators to delete the controversial Section 87 of the bill.
However, in seperate interviews, two principal officers of the Senate dropped hints that the National Assembly might not shift ground.
The clause, contained in Section 87 of the bill, would, if passed by the National Assembly, make federal lawmakers members of the National Executive Committees of their political parties.
The fear, however, in many parties, including the PDP, is that by becoming a part of the NECs, senators and House of Representatives members would, by their large number, take firm control of the decisions of their parties.
Part of the controversial section, which THE PUNCH obtained in Abuja on Monday, reads, “Section 87 (4) of the Principal (2010 Electoral) Act is amended by inserting immediately after sub-section (4) (11), the following new subsections:
