The Super Falcons coach, Eucharia Uche
The Super Falcons coach, Eucharia Uche, has urged the Confederation of African Football to look into the gender controversy surrounding the Equatorial Guinean team.
There were allegations that the Central African country fielded men in the tournament.
Speaking in Johannesburg after her team beat the Central Africans 4-2 to win the Seventh CAF African Women’s Championship on Sunday, the coach said the appeal was necessary to avoid embarrassment.
“CAF should do something about Equatorial Guinea so that Africa will not be embarrassed at the World Cup final next year in Germany,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted Eucharia as saying on Monday.
Nigeria won their sixth African title by beating the defending champions in the final match played at the Daveyton’s Sinaba Stadium.
Before the game, many of the participants at the competition had complained about two players in the Equatorial Guinean team – Salimata Simpore and Biliguisa Simpore.
The Nigeria Football Federation on Saturday lodged a protest with the CAF, and went ahead to pay the protest fee of $2,000 to back it up.
Ghana and South Africa had also complained about the players after losing to Equatorial Guineans in Group B and semi-final matches respectively.
Eucharia said, “This appeal is being done for the sake of Africa. It is not as if we are doing this because they beat us. Our players beat Equatorial Guinea square and fair, and there are no questions about our superiority.”
