Desire Oparanozie of Nigeria and Yulieht Dominguez of Columbia in the Semifinal match
Super Falcons striker Desire Oparanozie said on Sunday that the African Women‘s Championship title was worth the challenge the players encountered.
Nigeria defeated Equatorial Guinea 4-2 on Sunday to lift the trophy for a record sixth time and will also feature at next year‘s Women‘s World Cup.
Oparanozie, who was drafted from the Falconets that won silver at the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women‘s World Cup in Germany, was voted the Most Valuable Player in the final.
”I‘m really happy with our performance and I‘m happy we did not disappoint our supporters in this competition,” Oparanozie told SuperSport after the game.
”The Guineans were tough oppositions but we were determined to win the competition. This is the best way to crown our efforts.”
The 17-year old, who admitted she got inspiration from a former Falcons forward Mercy Akide-Udoh, said she was happy with her goals in the competition.
She was also grateful to her teammates and the coach for the assistance and encouragement she got during the competition.
The player said, “The victory has proved that Nigeria are truly the best in African football. We did not underrate any of the team and that helped us when we played against the hosts and the defending champions.”
