End strike in your varsities, S’East governors told

Some matriculating students of Wellspring University, Benin City, Edo State, during the maiden matriculation of the institution.
The Committee of Directors of Academic Planning of Nigerian Universities has called on the five state governors in the South East region of Nigeria to put an end to a protracted strike embarked upon by university lecturers in their states.

This was contained in a communiqué released at the end of the 2010 CODAPNU workshop and annual general meeting held at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State.

It stated, “Governors should urgently address this issue as soon as possible so that children who are leaders of tomorrow can return back to school. The unending strike in Nigeria by state universities in the South East geopolitical zone has a capacity to erode quality of education service delivery.”

The directors also accused Nigerian universities of not promoting healthy rivalry among themselves, noting that this had hindered effective collaboration among the institutions.

“The Nigerian universities do not encourage effective collaboration and linkages amongst themselves, rather they are into unhealthy rivalry and competition.
