Our future is in jeopardy, UNIABUJA medical students lament

Five years after gaining admission to the University of Abuja, medical students have remained on the same spot. As the battle to accredit the medical school rages, John Alechenu captures the students’ mood and what may befall them in the weeks ahead.



The demand for university education has soared in Nigeria over the last 50 years. Professional courses such as Medicine, Engineering and Law are mostly oversubscribed.

In a bid to meet this growing demand, several universities irrespective of ownership structures, have set up schools and colleges. However, some in a rush to set up these universities either ignore existing laws governing the establishment of universities or simply feign ignorance. The University of Abuja medical school falls within this category.

A National Universities Commission’s list of approved science courses for the University of Abuja does not include medicine. Science courses approved for the University of Abuja as at August 2010 were Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics.
