Fayemi advises police on professionalism

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has advised the Nigeria Police Force to be more professional in crime detection and prevention.

The governor gave the advice in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday when the new Assistant Inspector General of Police , Zone 8, Mr. Donald Iroham, visited him.

Fayemi, said that policing had gone beyond the use of force alone to prevent crime. He said that his administration would provide assistance for the police to tackle crimes in the state.

According to him, “On our part, you can count on our support, cooperation and solidarity because we believe that the Police are our friends and we believe that they will protect our citizens.

“The issue of using the Force Headquarters to harass innocent citizens have been of concern to us but it has since subsided. The Inspector General of Police has said that there is a need to respond to some petitions but we want our people to cooperate with the Police.”

Iroham, who later addressed journalists at a press conference, said that he visited to acquaint the officers and rank and file of the formation on their roles in the forthcoming general elections.

The AIG said that policemen would be educated on the Electoral Act so that they would know what was expected of them during the poll.

Iroham, said that the sensitisation of policemen ahead of the polls became necessary so that the goal of the Federal Government in ensuring free, fair and credible election is conducted in the country is achieved.

He stated that reform was already going on in the Force, adding that equipments had been imported to ease monitoring of activities in Nigerian cities.
