Police rearrest trigger-happy cop in Lagos

L-R: Ogun State CP, Musa Daura, Jubril

Mr. Gbenga Fashola, the trigger-happy police corporal, who shot a 23-year-old Ghanaian, Mr. Jubril Rasheed, on the buttocks and rendered him impotent has been rearrested and is being detained at the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos.

PUNCH METRO gathered that Fashola was invited to the command and was subsequently detained after being interrogated on the order of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, Mr. Sulaiman Salkai.

Speaking in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer for the zone, Mr. Kenneth Odigwe, confirmed the invitation and detention of Fashola in Lagos.

“The policeman has been invited and eventually detained. The AIG has commenced investigation into the matter. As I told you earlier, the AIG is very interested in the matter and is determined to ensure that justice is done,” he said.

Besides, he said Jubril and his father, Clement, and other interested parties in the matter had been invited to a meeting with the AIG in Lagos on Thursday (today).

He also stated that every relevant document regarding the case had been forwarded to the AIG for investigation.

Both Jubril and his father acknowledged the receipt of the AIG’s invitation in a telephone interview with our correspondent.

“I have received the invitation and we are to appear before the AIG tomorrow (Thursday). I am happy with this development and I strongly hope that the AIG as a father will ensure that justice is done in the matter,” Jubril said.

Jubril’s father, who expressed joy over the planned meeting, expressed hope that justice would eventually be done.

Salkai had intervened in the matter following the public outcry that greeted the reinstatement and promotion of Fashola, who was earlier dismissed after facing an orderly room trial for unjust use of firearms on Jubril.

Fashola, who was attached to Sabo Police Station, Abeokuta, Ogun State, had on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, allegedly dragged Jubril, to the police station and shot him twice over an allegation that Jubril’s elder brother was having an affair with a hairdressing apprentice who is well known to him (Fashola).

The bullets pierced through Jubril’s buttocks and affected his scrotum.

The Ogun State Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, had in a statement on Sunday insisted that Fashola was reinstated based on the Director of Public Prosecution’s advice that the policeman had no case to answer.

But the Director of Public Prosecution, Mr. Olaotan Olusegun, said the police in their report claimed that Jubril wanted to flee after he had been arrested and that accidental discharge occurred when the 23-year-old Ghanaian was being pursued by Fashola.

Besides, he said, “Unfortunately, we do not have the information that an orderly room trial was earlier conducted and that the policeman had been dismissed. The police did not disclose this to us.”
