Analysts have expressed divergent views on the legality of the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee’s suspension of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria title from the former Attorney- General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, writes WAHAB SHITTU. The temporary suspension by the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee of the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, from the use of the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria pending the determination of the merits of the allegations contained in the petition forwarded to it by the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, has elicited a chain of reactions for and against the propriety of the action with the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association raising the bar of arguments in the matter in favour of the fact that the action of the LPPC in the circumstances amounted to an usurpation of the functions of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee of the NBA statutorily charged with the responsibility of disciplining erring legal practitioners.
The essence of this contribution is to examine the merits or otherwise of the contention of the eminent parties involved in this controversy against the realities of the applicable laws and guidelines regulating the conduct of legal practitioners and Senior Advocates of Nigeria generally.
