Ahead of the 2011 general elections in Rivers State, CHUKWUDI AKASIKE observes an unusual lull in the opposition parties‘ camps and writes that such silence could cost them victory in the forthcoming poll.
AS the 2011 elections draw near, political parties in the country are putting finishing touches on how they can improve on their performance in the 2007 poll. Many of these political parties have continued to express optimism that given a level playing field, they are going to surprise the ruling parties.
In Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Oyo, Ogun and some other states, the contest between the opposition and the ruling parties is expected to be competitive. From the outset, members of the opposition parties have not hidden their feelings on the ruling parties‘ policies and have always ventilated their dissatisfaction without any form of prevarication.
But the situation appears to be different in Rivers State as the opposition parties have continued to remain silent, even as the Peoples Democratic Party-led government prepares to sustain its existence as the ruling party beyond 2011. To worsen the already bad situation, a former chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria in the state, Mr. Tonye Princewill, who is seen as the leader of the coalition of opposition parties in the state, has defected to the PDP.
