Reaching a consensus on the aspirant that will represent the north in the forthcoming Peoples Democratic Party primaries has become an albatross on the neck of politicians and stakeholders from the region, writes SEGUN OLATUNJI.
The crack on the walls of the North over a consensus presidential aspirant that would fly the flag of the region in the forthcoming Peoples Democratic Party primaries has continued to widen.
Indications that the North would have a Herculean task producing a consensus aspirant first emerged late July when the 19 northern governors in Kaduna merely stopped short of endorsing President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2011 presidential election.
The governors had then thrown back the issue of zoning to the PDP, saying it was a party affair. They further noted that Jonathan, like every other qualified Nigerian, had the legitimate right to contest the office of the nation‘s president.
During the tension-soaked NGF meeting, many youth groups from the region supporting the retention of the zoning arrangement openly protested against the alleged plan by the northern governors to endorse Jonathan‘s aspirations.
With this development, the North was thrown into a fix over the vexed issues of zoning and power rotation. And ever since then discordant tunes have been wafting from various sections and groups from the North on who should be the region‘s consensus aspirant.
