How effective coastal surveillance can improve maritime security

The task of stemming insecurity in international waters calls for effective coastal surveillance. SULAIMAN ADENEKAN, who was at the just concluded conference on maritime security in Singapore, writes on the challenges and how to tackle them.



The threat constituted by illegal maritime activities like piracy and armed robbery to security and commercial activities of the shipping community calls for effective surveillance of the global waters.

Coastal surveillance, according to maritime experts, is required because of its multiplier effects on the reduction of theft of goods and ships, as well as trade delays, which often result in high cost of shipping operations, insurance premium and alternation of shipping routes.

Experts from various parts of the world discussed the strategies to adopt in improving costal surveillance globally at the just concluded international conference on, ”Global Maritime Domain Awareness on Coastal Surveillance,” which held at Sentosa Island in Singapore.
