Samuel Ogundare
Mr. Samuel Ogundare is the Chairman, Bel Papyrus limited and Bel Impex Limited, members of Boulous Group of Companies. However, before going into the private sector, he spent 37 years in the civil service, holding different positions in various offices and retiring as a permanent secretary in 1982. Ogundare, who was the pioneer executive secretary of the Price Control Board of Nigeria between March 1976 and March 1979, shares his experiences in this interview with CHINYERE FRED-ADEGBULUGBE
What can be done to enhance productivity in the private sector?
Today, things are not as they used to be. There are a few things which are incapacitating manufacturers. One is inconsistency in government policy because it means that they cannot plan on the policies. Then, there is the problem of unavailability of funds to get raw materials and other things. Furthermore, when the market is not even there, they will not be able to produce as much as they would have wanted to. For instance we produce a lot of toilet paper products and we are being assisted by our own research. We get our raw materials from those who consider them as waste and produce.
Another problem is that manufacturers are spending so much on power and personnel. It is true that we have reduced the quantity of diesel we use because of gas, nevertheless we are not able to meet set target.
