Fear grips community as two drown in abandoned canal

The Canal
For residents of Ajebo Lane, Kasumu, Adebari, Jinadu and Soyinka streets in Agege area of Lagos, the fear of an abandoned canal in the area is now the beginning of wisdom.

The fear of the people is genuine as the densely populated community was hit by a double tragedy last Monday when a 10-year-old pupil of Al-Huda Wa Rahmon Nursery and Primary School, Agege, Ibrahim Jimoh, and a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers identified simply as Idowu fell into the canal and died.

It was gathered that while Idowu died on the spot, Jimoh was first taken to Madek Hospital, Agege, where he was rejected. He was later confirmed dead at Mayfair Hospital, Agege.

“When work began at the canal, we heaved a sigh of relief, thinking that flooding of the area would soon abate after the project was completed, but the canal had now become a death trap. If you slip and miss your step, you are likely to fall into the canal and before you are rescued, it may have been too late,” a resident, who identified himself simply as Akin, told PUNCH METRO on Saturday.

On how Jimoh died, his mother, Mrs. Musiliu Bello, said she was not at home when the incident happened but met his son’s corpse at home when she returned.

Recalling the traumatic experience, which she said would live with her for the rest of her life, Bello, who appeared to have lost her voice due to continuous crying, said, “The incident happened around 7.30pm. I was told that he just left home and nobody knew where he was going. But I believe God has knowledge about everything.
