U.N. official condemns attack on peacekeeping mission in Congo

The U.N. special representative to Congo on Monday strongly condemned an attack led by dozens of armed men on the U.N. mission's operating base in Rwindi, a spokesman said.
The incident began Saturday night when about 50 armed men wielding automatic and locally fabricated weapons descended on the base of the peacekeeping mission and, before opening fire, declared their attention to attack.
After issuing several warnings to the group, peacekeepers returned fire, killing eight gunmen and wounding two others, U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said. No injuries were reported among the peacekeepers.
Two AK-47s, three machetes, a grenade and other explosives were recovered following the attack, the U.N. mission said in a press release.
"We're trying to ... identify the assailants and to find out why they carried out this attack," Nesirky said.
Early indications point to the workings of the Mai Mai militia group, the U.N. press release said.
Congolese Army soldiers have taken several individuals into custody.
