The Oct. 15, 2010 declaration of Dr. Kayode Fayemi as the lawful winner of the Ekiti State governorship poll held on April 14, 2007 and the rerun polls held on April 25 and May 5, 2009 by the Court of Appeal has further proved right an axiom that “no mountain is insurmountable with determination.” Fayemi, the new governor of the state with the sobriquet of the “Fountain of Knowledge,” proved to be a dogged fighter.
Fayemi is not new to struggles as he played a prominent role in the diplomatic engagements, which eventually led to the ouster of the military from the nation’s politics. With a first degree in History from the University of Lagos and a doctorate degree in War Studies from the King’s College, University of London, Fayemi was able to record victory in the 42-month legal and political battles despite assassination attempts and a smear campaign against him. Fayemi, who had a stint as a journalist, was one of the forces behind Radio Kudirat, which was a threat to the regime of the late Gen. Sani Abacha. Buoyed by his past victories over stiff oppositions, the Isan Ekiti-born politician was able to pursue his mission of retrieving his stolen mandate from the firm grip of the illegal Segun Oni administration foisted on the state by the Peoples Democratic Party.
