IBADAN—ABOUT 3,400 retired staff of the University of Ibadan, UI, have threatened to disrupt this year’s convocation of the institution in November if the Federal Government fails to pay their pension arrears ranging from 26 to four months.
The retired staff vowed to cause serious embarrassment for the institution if their legitimate entitlements were not settled before the ceremony.
The retirees under the aegis of the Nigerian Universities Pensioners Association, UI chapter, said through their Secretary, Mr. Aguwa Ignatius, that some of its members had not been paid their gratuities since 2004.
Besides, he complained that some who were lucky to be paid theirs were short paid, adding that the association had made repeated pleas with the institution to settle them.
Though, they did not hide the fact that some of the outstanding arrears had been paid by the institution, but said the remaining four months out of the 26 months owed them was yet to be paid.
But the institution’s Bursar, Mr. Ibrahim Aponmade, told the angry ex-staff of the institution that the university had gone extra mile to lessen the plight of the retirees.
He reminding the retirees that on many occasions, it had paid them from its coffers when the Federal Government was yet to pay them.
Mr. Aponmade added that there was no way the authorities of the school would withhold their money when the Federal Government released it.
The pensioners urged the authorities to put more pressure on the Federal Government because they would make good their threat to disrupt the convocation.
