Collapse Building in Lagos.
The Lagos State government is set to demolish 9 buildings on Lagos Island considered to be weak, in a pro-active move to stem the spate of building collapse in the state.
General Manager, Lagos State Physical Planning and Development Agency (LASPPDA), Dr. Oke Osanyintolu, who disclosed this during an inspection visit to the site of a collapsed building at Alli Street, Lagos Island, declared that five other buildings have been pencilled down for test to determine their status.
According to him, the structures to be demolished are located on Nos. 20, 22, 24, 26/28 Alli Street, 4A and 9A Obe Street and 11, 13, 15 Obadina Street, all in Tinubu/Itafaji areas of Lagos Island. While those earmarked for test are on 17 Obadina Street, 30, 32, 23 and 25 Alli Street, also on the Island.
The Lagos State official noted that government had continuously warned owners of houses whose construction were found not to have net specified standard and those that are weak due to old age to renovate them since two years ago. “Since they have failed to comply with the advice, rules and regulations of the state government, we cannot allow such incidents to continue where lives and properties are lost.
All deficient structures in this state will not be left behind so as not to leave any stone unturned. It is not only this area that will be affected, other places on the Island where such structures are situated will be touched,” he stated.
