Ecobank deploys 8,000 ATMs in 30 countries
Ecobank has upgraded its Regional Card (Debit/Automated Teller Machine Card) services, enabling customers‘ access their naira accounts via the over 8,000 Ecobank and non-Ecobank ATMs and Point of Sales terminals in Nigeria and over 30 other countries in Africa.
The Managing Director of the bank, Mr. Jibril Aku, who announced this in a statement on Friday, said that the naira denominated debit card would allow Ecobank accountholders access funds in their accounts in Nigeria, as well as in the local currencies of the 30 countries where an Ecobank ATM was present.
Aku listed the 30 African countries to include, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Democratic Republic) and Côte d‘Ivoire.
Others are, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, and Zambia.
In addition, he said that the card could also be used on over 1,860 Nedbank ATMs in South Africa.
Aku, however, explained that a customer only needed to open an account and apply for the Ecobank Regional card in order to access his/her funds from any Ecobank ATM in the 30 countries.
He said that the cards are available to anyone with an Ecobank account and would offer considerable advantage to Nigerians travelling to any of the African countries where the bank was present.
He said, “You will not need to carry any travellers‘ cheque or any cash at all when visiting any of the 30 African countries above, as you will be able to access local currencies from any Ecobank ATM and 1,860 Nedbank ATMs in South Africa.”
