Citibank Nigeria Limited’s employees across the country joined more than 45,000 volunteers in 75 countries for the bank’s fifth annual Global Community Day on Saturday.
Nearly 300 volunteers, including families and friends of Citibank Nigeria’s employees, organised library projects and book donation drives across the country.
The theme for this year‘s event in Nigeria was, “Reading is FUN-damental!”
Commenting on the event, the Managing Director, Citibank Nigeria, Mr. Emeka Emuwa, said, “Getting to spend the day with giving back to our communities is a privilege for all of us. The Global Community Day is an important day in our global calendar and we take our corporate citizenship responsibilities just as seriously as we do our day-to-day business.
”As the world navigates through challenging economic times, such as we are in at the moment, our efforts in this area are even more significant to the less privileged and vulnerable members of our communities.”
Volunteers in Lagos visited the Heart of Gold Children‘s Hospice in Surulere, where staff converted a room in the home into a reading and computer library for the children.
The hospice library, the bank said, was now equipped with text books for the kids attending primary school, as well as a computer to help stimulate and teach the kids, who remain at the home because they were unable to attend school.
In Port-Harcourt, Citibank volunteers also worked on a library for the Orogbum Community Centre.
In Aba, Abuja , Kano and Warri, employees visited orphanages and charitable homes where they also donated books and spent the day interacting with kids in the various homes.
