Siasia needs home-based players to succeed–Ex-F’Eagles star
Samson Siasia
Former Flying Eagles defender Julius Kayode has advised Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia to build the national team around domestic league players, saying the ex-Nigeria striker need them to succeed.
Kayode was a member of the Flying Eagles at the 1995 Africa Youth Championship hosted by Nigeria.
He said, ”Siasia must comb every corner of the country to get the best players for the Eagles. The foreign-based players are still very important in the team because they will give the needed confidence to the domestic league players, who in my opinion should form the nucleus of the national teams.
”Luckily, Siasia is a coach who understands the mentality of Nigerian players, having coached at youth level and in the domestic league. So, he won‘t have much difficulty getting the best players from our league.”
The former Azerbaijan-based player, who is the head coach of BFUT Africa, an institute set up to teach players and coaches the Brazilian football philosophy, added that the domestic league had improved tremendously compared with what it used to be in the past.
He said, “The standard of our league is very high now. We have seen some away wins and draws, which is very good for the game. I watched Pillars and Enyimba in Kano recently and I was happy at the tactical and technical discipline exhibited by the players.”
