Cardiff City target Danny Shittu

Cardiff City are credited in several news reports on Thursday with an interest in Millwall defender Danny Shittu – who will become available after expiry of his short term deal with the Lions.

Cardiff City are undoubtedly in the market for a centre-half, and have previously been linked with a move for the stocky defender.

In fact, Shittu is more than that – he is a tank but also a powerful and experienced centre-half at this level.

Many fans will remember coming up against Shittu in the lower leagues, especially the memorable play-off final against QPR with Andy Campbell‘s sweet driven lob.

The Nigerian only recently joined up with Millwall, following his release from Bolton Wanderers – but after a slow start, he has been part of a Lions side that has conceded just one goal in the last four games in which he has played.

Cardiff City Boss Dave Jones has made a new centre-half his number one priority with the January transfer window about to open.

The Bluebirds manager has been openly critical of his back four during a run that has seen them pick up just one win and two draws since losing to Swansea City at the start of November.

Jones must wait and see how much Malaysian investor Vincent Tan is prepared to loosen the purse strings, but he knows that a new defensive solidity lies at the heart of any new year revival.

Chris Riggott, the former Middlesbrough central defender, is now fit and ready to play, but he has been out of action for so long the feeling is that it would be wrong to heap too much immediate pressure on him.
