Brother kills brother
Slained Abubakar with his wife
Two Fulani men are in police custody over the death of one of their kinsmen. Their arrest, Daily Sun learnt, followed the discovery of part of a decomposed body of a 27-year-old Fulani man, near the house of his elder brother after being declared missing three months ago from his Sabon Birni village, 30 kilometers drive from Kaduna, Kaduna State.
Mallam Muhammad Abubakar is the elder brother of the deceased, Idi Abubakar. He said since the brother got missing he has continued to pray to God to bring his brother back home or at least know what exactly happened to him.
God answered his prayer miraculously by sending somebody who revealed how the brother was allegedly brutally murdered, dissected into three parts and his motor cycle snatched and sold to someone in Katsina for N17, 000. Abubakar told Daily Sun: “I complain to the CID, the Metropolitan Police and the Rigasa Divisional Police Station of my brother’s disappearance from home since the month of Ramadan (Muslim’s fasting month), that is over three months ago and since then there was no tangible response from them.
“I resigned to fate and continued to pray until last Saturday at about 3am when one Digida (not real name) came to my house, claiming to know those who killed my brother. He said, two of my neighbours simply called and some others he could not recollect their names, while smoking Indian hemp in their hide-out bragged to him about how they killed him, and how they robbed him of his motorcycle and killed him.
“This frightening information made us to quickly mobilize and alert the police who immediately swung into action. The suspects upon their arrest confessed to the police at Sabon Birni of committing the heinous murder of my brother. “One of them confessed to the police that they robbed the late Idi of his JINCHEN motorcycle in front of his house, matcheted him to death and chopped the body into three parts. They dumped the remains into a nearby river, while the other part was buried somewhere along the road close to my house.
“I was able to identify the decomposed part of my brother Idi with the ring he wore on one of his fingers. The suspect also told the police that they took Idi’s motorcycle to Katsina and sold it to someone at the cost of N17, 000. “What really surprised me was the way a community leader (name witheld), who built a house for one of the suspects in a remote bush, reacted to the issue. He told me to abandon the case if I will agree to any fee as compensation for my brother’s murder.
“Before now, I have been assisting to feed the two suspects, with their aged mother. I believe that my good gesture towards them and their family made nemesis to catch up with them in such a miraculous manner nobody least expected. “When I complained to the police of sighting one of the suspects in Sabon Birni, even when investigation into the case was still going on, the police scolded me to stop disturbing them.
They said, I don’t have the right to challenge them even when the person in question is a prime suspect in the brutal killing of my brother. I am afraid of my safety, since I refused to agree to the community leader’s terms of withdrawing the case. “I later took my complaint to the Police Headquarters which prompted the re-arrest of the released suspects. That is why I am appealing to the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police to give me protection and to ensure that the case is not swept under the carpet. These people that carried out this barbaric act against my brother should be investigated and brought to face the wrath of the law.”
One of the suspects told Daily Sun at the State Police Headquarters that Idris collected N1, 000 from his cousin (name witheld) to teach him how to ride motorcycle but failed to show up on the appointed day: “This is what infuriated my cousin to follow Idris and waylaid him and matcheted him to death that night.
“My cousin informed me about the killing in the morning and I assisted in dragging the body to the river where we loaded stones into his trousers and dumped him in the river. We did not dissect the body. “That spot where the police said we buried part of the body is not true. It was the spot where we killed him that was covered with blood and his ring which we buried with sand.
“My cousin has since run away to Katsina with the motorcycle. I cannot confirm to you whether he has sold it or he is using it for Okada over there.” The suspect, who hails from Musawa Local Government in Katsina State, however, admitted informing Digida about the murder after Digida told them of his criminal activities of snatching motorcycles in Abuja:
“Look, even Digida that exposed us was lucky to know about it. When we went with him to work in a farm and we were all under the influence of drugs. We became loose with our mouths and we began bragging of the operations we had carried out. “Digida was the one that started telling us how he snatched a motor cycle from his victim in Abuja. He did not tell us whether he too had killed his victim or not.”
The suspect exonerated Sombabo (not real name) who was arrested with him of any complicity in the murder. He said the arrest of Sombabo was a case of mistaken identity. According to him, Sombabo was mentioned by Digida to be the person he usually addresses as his son, same way he addresses his cousin who is now at large.
Police spokesperson, Aminu Lawal, said investigation into the brutal killing was in progress. The suspect had given useful information that would lead to the arrest of his cohort, who is now at large: “We are making progress. I assure you all those arrested and have nothing to do with the killing will be released.”
