Reps to legislate against unbridled importation

THE days of unbridled goods’ importation to the country may have been numbered, going by current moves by House of Representatives, to legislate against the import armada regime.

The move by the lawmakers was disclosed yesterday, by the House of Representatives Committee on Industry Chairman, Solomon Agidani.

Agidani, who spoke at the third Policy Dialogue on the revival of Nigeria textile industry, bemoaned the negative effects the overwhelming presence of foreign goods in the Nigerian markets have on the domestic manufacturers, stressing that the need to fashion out a set of laws that would protect indigenous firms has even become more compelling.

Though, he lauded the renewed efforts of government to improve on power supply, he however pointed out that lack of cheap source of funds, unavailability of current technology and inadequate skilled manpower remain other challenges confronting local manufacturers from breaking even.
He said: “As stakeholders in industrial sector continue to meet to chart the way forward, all their recommendations and suggestions will be put together to form the basis for us as law makers to make laws that will protect our own indigenous companies.
