Our close shave with death-Survivors

Collapsed Building in Ibadan.

THURSDAY, October 21, 2010  was a black day for the residents of  a building  marked SW8/1413, located on Adefala Street, Isale-Ososami, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, as a section of the  building collapsed.
The incident left three people injured: 75-year-old  Mrs. Dorcas Taiwo, the landlady; a female tenant, Mrs. Adeola Oyelese; both of who are on admission at Ibadan Central Hospital and a male tenant, whose name could not be ascertained as at press time, but who other tenants said was a student of the University of Ibadan. He lived with his brother in the house and was said to have gone to the campus for an examination when the Nigerian Tribune visited the scene of the incident. He was said to have sustained injury on his hand.
None of the tenants, who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune could ascertain the time the building actually collapsed. But by 2a.m.Thursday morning, the news had reached the landlord’s children.
According to Mrs. Kemi Emmanuel, one of the children who resided in the building, having returned from her shop at about 10p.m. on Wednesday night, she  found it difficult to sleep. But not too long after she  did, she was woken up by someone who was calling the name Wale and because there was someone someone bearing the name  in the house, she became widely awake.
Mrs Emmanuel said: “I began to hear a strange sound -- paow, paow, paow. So, I quickly rushed to my children’s room, and saw that they had also been woken up by the strange sound. I was trying to calm them down when the back of the house collapsed  and people started shouting: ‘Help us o. My leg o. My hand o.’ The roof of my children’s room was also blown off,” she added.
