NITEL acquisition: Faces behind New Generation Consortium

The Federal Government last week approved the sale of the Nigerian Telecommunications Ltd. to the New Generation Consortium.

The most prominent person in the new owner company is Mr. Usman Gumi.

Gumi, the official spokesman of the consortium, is the Managing Director of G-Cell Wireless Ltd.

G-Cell is a mobile telephone operator offering voice and data services using Code Division Multiple Access technology. It is licensed to provide mobile, fixed telephony, international data access and long distance services.

G-Cell has been operating in several un-served and underserved areas of the Nigerian telecoms market including about 405 communities spread around Cross River State and Kwara State.

It is a beneficiary of more than $5m grant from the World Bank to address underserved markets in Nigeria. G-Cell also won the bid to operate the rural telephony project of the Ministry of Information and Communication in the North- East geopolitical zone.
