Digital mobile telecoms service provider, Etisalat Nigeria, has connected 5.7 million subscribers within the first two years of its operation.
The Managing Director of the company, Mr. Steven Evans, disclosed this at a ceremony marking the award of scholarships to 100 students from universities located in the northern parts of the country, according to a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Friday.
The 100 students were described as the most outstanding undergraduates in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Management Sciences in the Northern region universities, under its Annual Scholarship Award scheme.
The Abuja regional presentation ceremony, which was graced by officials of the National Universities Commission, vice chancellors and top representatives from the partner universities, among other dignitaries. The occasion had over 100 student beneficiaries in attendance.
Speaking on the occasion, Executive Secretary NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, who was represented by the Director, Management Support Services, Mr. Akinbode Agbaoye, commended Etisalat‘s corporate social responsibility initiatives aimed at contributing to the development of education, thereby, improving the quality of manpower among the youths.
Reaffirming Etisalat‘s commitment to impacting its community, particularly in the area of educational development, Evans said that people often wondered why the telecoms company was investing so much in education, having only been in business for two years.
According to him, ”For us at Etisalat, education remains the prime motivator of all economies and it is fundamental to the success of the future of Nigeria to have a pool of well educated youths.
”It is a privilege for Etisalat to be a driving force in the growth and development of the Nigerian educational sector.”
