Controversy trails suspension of monarch in Ondo

CRISIS looms in the oil rich Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State following the suspension of the traditional ruler of Awoye, one of the communities in the area.
The Baale of Awoye, Chief Oyekanmi Omomowo was last week suspended by the Olugbo-in-council over an alleged use of militants to terrorise people in the area.
Omomowo was arrested few weeks ago over an intra-village clash which led to the death of a fisherman from the town.
After he was released on bail, the Olugbo-in-council was said to have intervened and suspended the baale following alleged complicity in the crisis rocking the town.
The development had since forced fishermen in the community to suspend further fishing on the lagoon until peace would be restored in the area.
Speaking with newsmen on the issue in Akure on Friday, the secretary to Olugbo-in-Council, Chief Adewale Dimehin, said the paramount ruler of Ugbo Kingdom, Oba Obateru Akinruntan, approved the suspension of the traditional ruler following overwhelming evidences against him.
He explained that Akinruntan had since approved the composition of a three member committee of chiefs in the community to oversee the affairs of the village pending the conclusion of an on-going investigation against the suspended monarch.
However, the people of the town have protested against the suspension of the baale and the composition of the committee to oversee the affairs of the town.
The protesters, who were mainly women, insisted that the second-in-command to the suspended chief should be appointed as the interim head of the village pending the outcome of the police investigation.
