World Cup: Falcons fear no foe – Chikwelu
The Super Falcons celebrating
Super Falcons midfielder Rita Chikwelu says the African champions are not losing sleep despite being drawn in the same group as hosts and defending champions, Germany, along with Canada and France at next year‘s Women‘s World Cup.
Germany thrashed the Falcons 8-0 in a recent friendly game but Chikwelu says the cold weather contributed to their heavy defeat, adding that the squad will work harder to ensure they perform better at the World Cup.
”We promise that what happened in the friendly match will not happen again. We are going to start camping soon so that we can strengthen our squad before the competition,” Chikwelu told our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday.
The Falcons have never advanced beyond the group stage of the World Cup but the former Falconets star is hopeful that the team will break the jinx in Germany.
”It is good to be in the same group with the world champions but don‘t forget that we are also the African champions. With God on our side, we hope to reach at least the semifinal of the Women‘s World Cup,” the Sweden-based player added.
She said the Falcons were aiming to become the first African country to reach the last four of the Women‘s World Cup and urged Nigerians to back the team‘s players and the coaching crew to succeed at the tournament.
Nigeria only last month won the African Women’s Championship held in South Africa. The Falcons defeated Equatorial Guinea 4-2 in the final.
