Legislators’ jumbo pay: Sanusi versus National Assembly - What Nigerians say
CBN Governor Sanusi, Senate President David Mark
On Wednesday, the Central Bank Governor, Lamido Sanusi, appeared before the Senate to defend his submission that 25 per cent of the overhead in the nation’s annual budget is spent on the National Assembly. The online reactions by our readers show that Sanusi has the support of Nigerians that the NASS has become a financial burden on the nation’s resources.
Sanusi deserves an award as the Man of the Year for this singular act. He is a true leader, fearless one for that matter. He is not even afraid to lose his job. Thanks, we love you.
Abayomi
Sanusi is the type of Northerner the Presidency should be zoned to and the whole nation will sing Hallelujah!

I have in a way mentioned it that no matter what the National Assembly members are into, with reference to their assignments in Abuja, they must never forget that they are there to serve Nigeria. The import of this is that they should be careful and watchful about their remunerations simply because almost all their constituencies are yet to feel their impact on roads and infrastructure.

Our lawmakers are rouges and sadists. Could any of them raise his or her head high in their respective states by pointing to their achievements? Why the useless noise on Sanusi? History will judge them all. They should all go and learn the standard way of measuring the truth.

Personally, I think people, especially legislators, should learn to do their home work before jumping the gun. The furore on what Mallam Sunusi had said clearly indicated the shallow nature and also the sentiment inherent within those people and if this is the way an “enlightened” group could conceptualise issues, then really, we have a problem as a people and as a nation. It is time for them to know that they are a bunch of public servants and could be questioned too.

Imagine Iyiola Omisore as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance and Appropriation; that shows the level of people in our National Assembly. If thugs can be committee chairmen, what do Nigerians expect from such committees if not threats and blackmail. The finance minister is serving the Senators.

We still have cause to have hope in our country Nigeria since we still have people like Sanusi in our midst. Surely, Nigeria will be great again. Sanusi should kindly create time to lecture those so-called lawmakers the difference between overhead and recurrent expenditure. You may be surprised to know that about 95 per cent of those lawmakers cannot differentiate between those two words. After all, most of them were selected by thugs and rogues. Kudos to our sincere Sanusi.

Sanusi is a good man. Now, look at the finance minister, who chickened out before the Senators? People seem to have forgotten that OBJ made the same comments on the lawmakers’ emoluments some months back. Sanusi is not a jobseeker; he even told them that he was willing to go and would not fight if sacked. So, tell me what you can do to someone who is the first to ask for what you want to use to put fear in him?

Dear Sanusi, with men like you, there is still hope for Nigeria. The legislators should know we didn’t vote for them to become extravagant gods!
Aagbo Jude
Mr. Sanusi, I salute you. For the thieves, you can leave them to God’s judgement.

The total membership of the NASS is less than 500. The population of Nigeria is about 150 million. The NASS claimed that they had merely spent 3.5 per cent of the budget as overhead, which translates to about N150bn, but they failed to realise that they are less than 0.02 per cent of the total Nigerian population to have spent such amount on themselves!

I pity President Goodluck Jonathan. He is surrounded by wolves and slime balls. Some are mainly traitors; some are parasites; some are namby-pamby, and some are hardworking. I need not name the people lest the responses will be insults, irrational defensive talks and self glorification. The saving grace is that from time to time we get citizens like Femi Falana, Ngozi Iweala, Babatunde Fashola, Dora Akunyili, Nuhu Ribadu and Sanusi.

May God bless Sanusi for saying the truth to the powers that be. These dishonourable people do not deserve to be the beneficiaries of the democracy that many died to enthrone. A member of parliament in the UK does not earn more money than a headmaster and people serve for free in the House of Lords. Why should we pay them millions for doing nothing useful to the masses? How I wish we had opposition parties with a different vision on how we need to govern our nation.
Akin Akingbesote
Sanusi, you are indeed a patriot, a democrat. Refuse to be intimidated by lawless bunch of lawmakers. They should be aware that they were all elected to serve the nation and not to feel like gods. Anyway, I wouldn‘t blame them because the masses are hungry; as such, they always find their way to political offices through manipulation which their grand children will surely inherit. They even go as far as spending the money meant for their constituencies.

I wonder why so much noise is being made over this issue. It goes on to show how petty and uneducated most of the lawmakers are. The Central Bank Governor has said that the 25 per cent is calculated from government overhead. I now wonder why the issue is being over-flogged. One might begin to think that the members of the National Assembly do not have better issues to discuss in their chambers. They should get busy.

I am not a Sanusi fan but I salute the courage of this rare specie among so many lily-livered people. I honestly thought he was going to cringe before the thieves at the National Assembly and claim he was misquoted. Nice to know there are still some people in our country with a conscience and some courage.

Kudos to you Mallam Sanusi. You have again demonstrated character, principle and decorum. There is no need for remorse and apology. Those National Assembly members have failed Nigerians.
Stephen Tor
Sanusi, you are indeed a patriot; refuse to be intimidated by these lawless bunch of lawmakers who feed fat on the common tilt while the majority of the people wallow in penury. God will judge them accordingly.

It’s high time professionals and career officers in the services of the Federal Government started to voice out their agitation at the excesses of our politicians. I give kudos to Mr. Sanusi for having the gut to stand by the truth. The drama at the hearing further confirmed that Nigeria is in trouble if these are the crop of our respected Senators. I pity Mr Aganga for not being courageous. I can’t blame him anyway; he is one of Nigeria‘s problems.
Dr. A.A. Adebowale
Who cares what percentage it is, whether 25 per cent or three percent? What matters is the N150bn they got in 2009 when each Senator got N240m in salary and allowances; Rep members got about N203m. In the same year, an American Senator earned about N28m and a British parliamentarian earned N17m. Barack Obama earned about N64m and British Prime Minister earned N47m.
Mayowa
It is unfortunate listening to the ignorance or rather greedy traits exhibited by our federal lawmakers. One was bold to say that their take-home pay is one third of a US Senator without comparing what an average worker in US earns compared to his counterpart in Nigeria or the ratio of our annual budget to that of the US. A government secondary school in Kuje has as many as 120 students in a classroom. You and I know that N40m will build 60 of such classrooms at least.
Titus Yeke
Sanusi, you are my man! Men of noble character like you are very hard to find in Nigeria. There are too many sycophants who have sold and seared their conscience because of peanuts they hope to get from handouts. Don’t quit! Nobody can force you out. God has placed you there and you must conclude your assignment. Ride on!
David I Wende
I think both Sanusi and Aganga are correct. The context and terms are very clear. Overhead cost is not the same as recurrent expenditure; so the figures cannot be the same.
Buma G. Biborga
Many days for the thief, one day for the owner and the owner is God. He will soon judge these thieves without mercy since they are merciless and without conscience. May the wrath of God on them not end until their 50th generation!
Opi
Okay, let us even assume that the NASS is correct on 3.5 per cent. Based on the national budget, it costs us about N439m to maintain each of the 432 NASS members and a little less than N25,000 for the remaining 149,999,640 of us, the other Nigerians. God bless Nigeria!
Zoba
I must confess that I love men like Sanusi. If more men like him can step out and stand up to these few rogues who think they can do all they like and then intimidate Nigerians, our nation will soon smile. If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything. God bless you. What sort of apology?
