The House of Representatives Committee on Sports said on Wednesday that the corruption case involving banned FIFA Executive Committee member, Dr. Amos Adamu, was ”confusing” and required further investigations by Nigerian lawmakers.
Adamu had appeared before the committee in Abuja earlier on Tuesday to claim that his suspension was unjustifiable.
He also denied demanding $800,000 bribe in the course of negotiations to trade off the hosting rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
He has been suspended on November 18 and banned from all FIFA-related activities for three years after the football governing body‘s Ethics Committee found him guilty of the bribery charge.
FIFA also slammed a fine of 10, 000 Swiss Francs on Adamu.
However, the Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Mr. Gbenga Elegbeleye, said on that Adamu‘s case was confusing.
According to him, the confusion stems from the fact that another FIFA member, Reynald Temarii, who was accused of the same offence as Adamu got a lesser penalty of one-year ban.
Elegbeleye added that the committee was investigating the matter and had directed Adamu to ”forward all the documents relating to the proceedings of the FIFA committee‘s findings to us.”
He added, ”From what is before us, the whole thing is confusing.
”Someone was involved in the same matter and he was banned for only one year.”
