The House of Representatives on Thursday re-visited the amendments to the Electoral Act 2010 as it passed a bill on the subject during its first reading.
The bid to amend the Act had failed earlier after the Senate rejected the Executive version of the proposal on October 20.
But the House re-introduced the Act on Thursday, through a private member bill in what it said was a move to bring it (Act) in agreement with certain clauses of the 1999 Constitution (First Alteration).
The lead sponsor of the bill, Mr. Cyril Maduabum, explained that without amending the Act, the constitution amendment process would not be complete.
According to Maduabum, while the constitution provides that the dates for elections shall be fixed by the Independent National Electoral Commission in “accordance with the Electoral Act,” the Act itself does not mention the issue of dates.
