Falcons draw Germany again


Canada and Germany will playthe opening match of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup on June 26 in Berlin after being drawn into a group with the hosts and defending champions.


Also falling into Group A at Monday’s draw in Frankfurt were African champion Nigeria and France. Germany is ranked second in the world, compared to No. 9 for Canada.
The Canadian women, who won the CONCACAF regional qualifying tournament earlier this month, have won six straight matches since a 5-0 friendly loss to Germany in September.
The Germans won the last two Women’s World Cups — most recently in China in 2007.The United States, a two-time champion that needed to win an extra qualifier over Italy to earn a spot in the tournament, was placed in Group C with North Korea, Colombia and Sweden.
Group B consists of Japan, New Zealand, Mexico and England. Group D is Brazil, Australia, Norway and Equatorial Guinea.
The top two teams in each of the four pools advance to the knockout quarter-final stage of the tournament, which runs June 26 to July 17 in nine German cities.
