Uti is ultimate Big Brother star

Uti Nwachukwu
Out of fourteen selected former Big Brother housemates who made up the Big Brother All Stars in the fifth season of the show, Nigeria‘s Uti Nwachukwu , 27, emerged as winner of the grand prize of $200, 000 (about N30m).

The prize money had been upped from the $100, 000 on offer last year. Incidentally, a Nigerian - Kevin Pam - also won last year‘s edition of Big Brother (Revolution). But then all this shouldn‘t be news to anyone who‘s been half interested in the Big Brother drama. So, do forgive for announcing Uti‘s victory as if it‘s fresh, almost one full week after.

But I was pleasantly surprised by Uti‘s victory. I hadn‘t expected him to win because I didn‘t think another Nigerian would be ‘allowed‘ to win in as many editions of the Big Brother show. Now it has happened, my surprise has disappeared faster than that of Zimbabwean and first runner up, Munya, who sat, hands on his head, open mouthed and couldn‘t quite believe his ears when Uti was announced winner, beating his seven country votes by just one country extra.

In the main, my interest in Uti‘s victory is his celebration: Full rendition of Nigeria‘s National Anthem and recital of The pledge. That was the height of patriotism (you could call it ‘patriutism‘). I heard that in some viewing centres, people joined in the singing of the anthem. Well, in my own home, my daughters (aged 10 and 8) laughed with happiness and it was the one time I didn‘t scold or remind them that the show was for 18 and older. Come to think of it, Uti managed to present Nigeria in good light. He didn‘t engage in any excessive behaviour - didn‘t drink to excess or womanise. Not even as a game plan.

So, there‘s actually a lot to be proud of. And former FCT minister, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, had this to say on his Facebook page: ”Uti Nwachukwu‘s mature and wise comportment in the Big Brother House and his eventual victory over contestants from several African countries in the Big Brother Africa All Stars reality show is evidence to those that say Nigerians youths are ”incapable” of leadership that they are wrong. Very wrong! ...Congratulations Uti. You have made Nigerians proud.”
