2011: Kaduna gov denies endorsing Babangida

Kaduna State Governor, Yakowa

Kaduna State Governor Patrick Yakowa has denied endorsing the presidential ambition of the former military president and aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.)

A northern-based newspaper was said to have reported that Yakowa endorsed Babangida’s aspiration when the ex-dictator visited him in Kaduna last Thursday.

Yakowa said at no time during the courtesy visit to him by Babangida and his campaign team, at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, Kaduna, did he describe the former dictator as the “most qualified” amongst those aspiring to secure the presidential ticket of the PDP for next year’s election.

The Kaduna governor wondered what the intention of the northern-based newspaper (name withheld) was in misrepresenting his statement in its report of the visit.

Yakowa’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Reuben Buhari said, in a statement on Saturday, that Yakowa only said on the occasion, which was covered by the correspondents of all the media organisations operating in the states that Babangida was “eminently qualified” to contest the PDP primaries and the presidency of the country in 2011 alongside other Nigerians interested in the number one office.
